Programs

Alongside research and teaching I build and run externally funded international programs. These are operating enterprises with budgets, partners, donors and reporting obligations, not standing committees.

Taiwan Research Academy

An intensive residential academic program bringing graduate students and faculty together to study Taiwan’s political system, economic development and public policy. The 2026 cycle ran eight days in June with eighteen students and sixteen faculty and guest speakers drawn from multiple institutions.

Institutional partners include the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy, Academia Sinica, National Chung Hsing University, National Taiwan University, and the George H. W. Bush Foundation for U.S.–China Relations.

Taiwan Studies Initiative

The umbrella for Taiwan-focused research, curriculum and public engagement at UT Dallas, supported by a multi-year Taiwan Ministry of Education Taiwan Studies Program award.

Mandarin and Culture Program

Delivered jointly with National Chung Hsing University under the Taiwan Ministry of Education’s Mandarin education framework, bringing language instruction and cultural programming to the North Texas region.

Selected external support

  • Taiwan Ministry of Education — Taiwan Studies Program
  • Taiwan Ministry of Education — Mandarin and Culture Program, with National Chung Hsing University
  • Taiwan Foundation for Democracy — project grants, 2025 and 2026
  • Research Grants Council of Hong Kong — two projects on electoral participation and public opinion measurement, with Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the University of Hong Kong

Convening and public engagement

I have organized and spoken at Taiwan policy and research convenings hosted at UT Dallas, National Chung Hsing University, Academia Sinica, the University of St. Thomas, Sam Houston State University, and the Greater Dallas Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce, and have served as an invited speaker on China’s digital governance at the American Bar Association.
